A Level PE  

Task: 

One of the first topics you will study in A Level PE is Skill Acquisition. A key area within this topic is understanding how skills can be classified. Coaches and performers use skill classification to identify the demands of different sporting activities and to decide how best to train and improve performance. 

This task will introduce you to the different skill continua that you will study in OCR A Level PE.

Understanding the Skill Continua 

For each continuum below: 

  1. Explain what each end of the continuum means.  
  1. Provide at least three sporting examples for each side.  
  1. Explain why the examples fit that classification.

Option 1: Applied Analysis 

Choose one sport that you participate in or enjoy watching. 

Select five skills from that sport and classify each skill using all six continua.

BTEC Level 3 Sport  

Practical Sport Performance is a core unit within the Level 3 BTEC National Extended Certificate in Sport. Throughout the course you will develop your understanding of the technical, tactical, physical and psychological demands of sport, while analysing and improving performance in practical activities. 

This transition task is designed to introduce you to the key concepts that will be studied throughout the course and prepare you for your first lessons in September. 

Task: 

Choose a sport that you regularly participate in or enjoy watching. 

Create a fact file or powerpoint explaining: 

Technical Requirements 

  • What skills are needed to be successful?  
  • Which skills are most important?  
  • How can these skills be improved?  

Tactical Requirements 

  • What decisions must performers make?  
  • How does strategy affect success?  
  • How do tactics change during competition? 

Psychological Requirements 

Consider: 

  • Motivation  
  • Confidence  
  • Concentration  
  • Determination  

Explain why these qualities are important in your chosen sport.

Elite Performer Analysis 

Watch a performance involving an elite athlete in your chosen sport. 

Produce a report (approximately 500–750 words) analyzing: 

Strengths 

  • Technical strengths  
  • Tactical strengths  
  • Physical strengths  
  • Psychological strengths  

Areas for Improvement 

  • What could the athlete improve?  
  • How could they improve it?  
  • What training methods might be used?
