BTEC Level 2 Health and Social Care – Tech Award
Course Information
There are a wide range of topics covered on the Health and Social Care Tech course. Areas covered include human lifespan development, types of health and social care services, values which are central to health and social care as well as health and wellbeing. This course provides a broad overview of the Health and Social Care Sector.
Study of this sector at Key Stage 4 will complement GCSE study through providing an opportunity for practical application alongside conceptual study. There are also strong opportunities for post-16 progression in this important sector.
What will I study?

Component 2: Health and Social Care Services and Values
Component 3: Health and Wellbeing
Component 1 and 2 are coursework based units and may take the form of written work, power points, presentations, role plays and posters. These are internally assessed and then verified by other health and social care teachers.

Potential career path
If students continue into the level 3 programme than this course sets the foundations for a range of careers.
After study in key stage 5, students can go on to a degree in nursing, midwifery, sociology, psychology, social work, criminology or youth work, or an HND in managing health and care services, social policy or teacher training.
If you wish to go into employment straight away, you could work in a registered care home, community work, the voluntary sector, a hospital or primary care trust.
Job roles include: care worker, pharmacy technician, laboratory technician, early years educator, support worker, ambulance technician, nursery nurse, teaching assistant, youth worker and many, many more.

In today’s fast-changing care sector, professionals at all levels need to be proactive and flexible to succeed. This course provides a sound and critical understanding of health and social care policy, theory and practice, and the skills you need for effective practice in a diverse, multidisciplinary environment. You’ll also understand how ethical, legal, social, economic and political factors influence the provision and development of services and gain the critical and analytical skills that underpin evidence-based practice. Healthcare covers more than caring for people who are ill. It also involves creating new and better treatments as well as educating people about healthy lifestyles.

There are a wide range of topics covered on the Extended Certificate course which is the equivalent to 1 A level.
Areas covered include communication skills, growth and development, diversity and equality, health and safety, and many more. This course provides a broad overview of the Health and Social Care sector, forming part of a programme of study including other courses e.g. BTEC Nationals or A levels.

Who’s it for?
The Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care aims to provide an introduction to the sector. It is for learners who are interested in learning about the health and social care sector as part of a balanced study programme. It is equivalent in size to one A Level. The qualification supports access to a range of higher education courses possibly, but not exclusively, in health and social care, if taken alongside further Level 3 qualifications. The qualification typically makes up one–third of a study programme.
Potential career path
Work in healthcare includes careers in medical treatment, such as doctors, nurses and healthcare science posts, as well as jobs in allied health professions like dentistry and other support roles.
Social care includes careers working with children, young people, adults, families and older adults.
