Last week our Y11 Geographers visited Scarborough to collect data on inequalities along a transect. Even with some challenging temperatures, the students managed to complete all their work with strong results and outstanding behaviour and attitudes, well done Geographers!

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we are now three weeks into the new term, I wanted to write to you in order to share some important information regarding school life here at All Saints’. You will notice as you read the letter that there are a number of different sections and topics which have been included into one document which I hope you will find easier to read and digest. Please may I remind you that a parent bulletin is sent out to you every week which is also a very useful source of information.

In terms of the vitally important Catholic Life here at All Saints’, we are delighted to inform you that Luke Potter who is currently training as an apprentice chaplain is working with us every Thursday. Luke is an ex-student of All Saints’ and his main remit is to work with our Chaplaincy team as well as support Mr Sheehan with his second role as Chaplain.

Over the summer, a great deal of building work took place including the replacement of the Astro turf with a new 4G pitch. New ‘open plan’ toilets were built for Years 9 and 11 students and a new Maths/Computing suite was created in the PA block. The site team also repainted many areas of the school and the refurbishment to the Sixth Form area was completed.

We have continued to revise our Rewards procedures and this year there are many opportunities for students to receive rewards. As well as achievement points, conduct certificates, commendation ceremonies and rewards days, we have also scheduled praise postcard weeks when staff will recognise students’ hard work and effort in class. There will be a focus on rewarding good attendance and punctuality, plus we have calendared another rewards day in February for students who show dedication to their studies. Interform competitions will run throughout the year, as we look forward to celebrating these events with the students.

May we remind you that the current school uniform policy is as follows:

School trousers should be-:

  • Black only
  • Straight leg or boot cut
  • Loose around the ankles and leg (not skin tight)
  • Not jersey / stretchy material

Secondly, we would like to reiterate the expectations regarding the days when students arrive in PE uniform. Students should ensure that the PE uniform is worn as smartly as the full school uniform. Students are still representing All Saints’ when wearing this attire. This includes:

Black joggers or leggings, which should be plain with only a small logo (approx. 5cm in width).

If shorts are chosen to be worn, they must be black and knee length. Hot pants are not allowed in school. The Blue PE top or GCSE black PE top with the school logo should also be worn whenever applicable as well as the black hoodie embossed with the school’s logo.

As you know, All Saints’ prides itself on extremely high standards. Where uniform issues occur, we will always endeavour to work with parents and carers to rectify them. The School does have a stock of new uniform and uniform items donated by parents and carers who have left the School. During these financially difficult times, please do not hesitate to contact the school, if you need support with your child’s uniform.

Moving to the important topic of the Curriculum, at this stage in the academic year, students have begun their respective studies in earnest. Our Year 7s are becoming increasingly familiar with their range of subjects and the independent study required for success in their classroom retrieval activities. Year 8 students continue to study a broad and balanced curriculum, which is very important this year as they will be selecting their GCSE options and will find conversations with parents and carers about their curriculum strengths and areas for development very valuable. Some of our students in Year 7 and 8 will have been selected for additional support in English and Maths and this will be to strengthen their core skills so they can be successful in their secondary subjects. To assist parents/ carers of Year 7/8 students, all curriculum areas have mapped out their homework requirements for the first term and this is on the school website, under Curriculum/ Homework and revision/ Homework Maps. Our Year 9 students have started their GCSE courses and therefore parents/ carers should see an increase in the amount of time Year 9 students are spending on their homework to ensure early GCSE success.

Our Year 10 students will continue with their GCSE courses and benefit from support outside of school to space the retrieval of information they learned right from the beginning of Year 9 and will need up to their GCSE exams in Year 11. Finally, our Year 11 students have started their final GCSE year; their mock examinations will begin on 7th November and students have received an assembly explaining that they should be preparing for those examinations now. Any parental support in terms of getting our Year 11 students into disciplined revision habits is appreciated and will serve the students well as this year intensifies and asks more and more of our students. On the weekly parental bulletin, Curriculum areas will be sending out key messages about upcoming deadlines and assessments so that parents are fully informed about the work being completed throughout Year 11. All of our KS4 students have received their GCSE Knowledge Organisers; parents and carers can be really supportive by quizzing students on the content of those organisers throughout the academic year.

To support our students in their organisation and preparation for lessons, you may have noticed that we have provided every child in Year 7 to 11 with the everyday resources they need for school including pens, mini-whiteboards and a display file to keep their knowledge organisers in. As mentioned previously, a significant proportion of the homework that your child receives will focus on self-quizzing, using the knowledge organisers (All Saints’ Absolutes), to allow students to secure the base knowledge needed to succeed in lessons. After training students in a number of techniques to retrieve information last year, including look, cover, say, write, check, brain dumps, Cornell note taking and the use of flashcards, we have produced a study skills booklet that will reinforce these approaches in the coming term. Once more, parents and carers have a key role in supporting our students with homework, from the checking of organisers to ensure that homework is recorded, through to the testing of students on their self-quizzing notes, to allow knowledge to be embedded. Should you wish to understand a little more about the techniques we are encouraging your child to use to support their revision and self-quizzing, you can access the school study skills booklet through this link  How to revise v2.docx

We are sure that your child will have a successful start to the academic year but should you have any questions about issues from homework to extra support available for students in certain subjects, please contact either your child’s class teacher, or the Curriculum Leader for the subject in question. We will be happy to offer you any guidance we can in relation to how you can support us in helping your child maximise their potential.

Finally, we are looking forward to another successful year and as ever we will do our very best to ensure that your child receives a high-quality Catholic education whilst continuing to nurture them spiritually and morally.

My very best wishes to you all.

Carlo Cuomo
Head Teacher

HOT WEATHER

Dear Parent/Carer,

As you no doubt know, next Monday and Tuesday are expected to be very hot (around 36C).

In order to combat this, we are making the following adaptations:

  • Students may come in the All Saints’ PE kit on Monday and Tuesday even if they do not have PE.
  • We will be opening the Sports Hall at lunchtime as a cool shaded space.
  • Water will be provided throughout lunchtime.
  • Activities at lunchtime will be adapted and calmer with students directed inside or to shaded areas.

What do we request of parents / carers?

  • Every child must bring a full, re-fillable water bottle every day.
  • A hat to wear at break and lunch would be very useful.
  • We would recommend, every child should have sun-cream applied at home each morning.

We will continue to monitor forecasts and if we need to make similar adaptations for other days in the week, we will let you know.

Thank you in advance for your understanding.

Y6 Information Evening

Open Eve Poster 2022

Dear Parent/Carer,

The School Aged Immunisation Service (SAIS) will be offering HPV 1st vaccinations to Year 8 students in school on Thursday 30 June 2022.   This vaccination session ONLY applies to students in Year 8.  It is important every eligible student has a completed online form which states if you would like them to receive the vaccination or not as this helps the school to prepare a timetable for students to attend for their vaccination.

As the session date is only a matter of days away, we should be grateful if you would register your online consent/refusal immediately by visiting the following link:

https://www.nottinghamshireimmunisations.co.uk/Forms/HPV_p1

The School Code for All Saints’ is: NG140698.

The deadline for registering your consent/refusal is Wednesday 29 June at 8.00 am.  Please ensure you have registered by the deadline.

As this is a medical matter, if you have any queries regarding the vaccinations or experience difficulty accessing the website you should contact the SAIS directly on 07920 182032 or via their email address SAIS@nottshc.nhs.uk – (please do not contact the school as school cannot give advice on medical matters).

Attached for your information are the following documents:

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support.

Dear Parents/ Carers
I would like to begin by thanking you for the support you have given our Year 11 students and the school throughout this academic year. The exam season will begin in earnest on Monday 16th May and this will be an intense, but exciting time for both students and staff so your continued support will be very much appreciated.
As the exam season is running during the Covid pandemic, a number of steps have been taken by the examining bodies to support candidates including:
• advance information on the focus of examinations for most subjects to help candidates revise;
• provision of support materials for some examinations (formulae and equation sheets);
• changes to non-examination assessment and fieldwork requirements in some subjects;
• optional content in some GCSE specifications;
• generous grading in comparison to the June 2019 examination series, providing a safety net for candidates;
• a minimum of ten days between the first and last examination in each GCE AS, A-level and GCSE specification, which will reduce the chance of a candidate missing all examinations in a subject because of illness.
This is a new procedure for this academic year designed to ensure that students can achieve their qualifications by sitting all of their examinations, as would be the case in pre Covid academic years. We expect that students attend all of their examinations and they must arrive in school at 8.50am when they have a morning exam. This will facilitate a prompt start to examinations.
If your child is demonstrating symptoms of Covid (e.g. a high temperature, continuous cough), or is genuinely unwell during the exam season, then you should telephone the school as a matter of urgency (Press 1 when the recorded message tells you to do so), or send an e-mail to exams@allsaints.notts.sch.uk and we will be able to offer guidance and support in relation to each individual notified case. UKHSA guidance (April 1st, 2022) clearly states that students should come into school to sit examinations if they have cold like symptoms, so long as they do not have a high temperature. Students can also come into school if there is a Covid positive result in the household.
If you have any questions about the arrangements for examinations for students affected by Covid, please contact Mr Cuomo (Headteacher) or myself, Mr Hutchinson. Furthermore, if your child’s performance in their examinations has been disadvantaged in any way through the exam period (e.g. due to illness, bereavement, domestic crisis) and you think your child may be eligible for special consideration, please contact Mr Collins. The special consideration process will need evidence to support an application and is not guaranteed to change the result of a child’s examination positively.
In order to support your child with their GCSE examinations, you will find below the link to the “Revision and Exam Timetable”
https://www.allsaints.notts.sch.uk/information/examinations/
Students will receive a paper copy of this document which explains where ‘breakfast’ and in-school revision sessions take place, along with the times when examinations will start. Please encourage your child to attend as many ‘breakfast’ sessions as they can, as these will supplement the independent revision your child is undertaking, to allow them to be fully prepared for each examination they sit. Personally, I would be placing this document on the fridge or somewhere that is a central point in the household. In this way, everyone knows which examinations are coming up and the manner in which your child’s study across the week needs to be distributed.
There are a number of resources on the school’s VLE
(https://ascatholicacedemy.sharepoint.com/sites/AllsaintsVLE) that will support your child’s preparation for examinations. Each subject page contains knowledge organisers, past exam questions and topic lists, which help students understand what they need to revise. Furthermore, each student will have their exercise books and the revision resources they have produced throughout their Key Stage Four studies, to support with their revision. We would expect that students are spending at least 2 hours on revision at the end of a school day (attendance at school interventions would be included in this) and your child should have a revision timetable that clearly allocates time to revise, rest as well as take part in other hobbies, so a healthy medium is found during the exam season. If you need any advice on how to support your child in creating an exam timetable, please contact Mr Collins (Year Progress Leader for Year 11) at collins.a@allsaints.notts.sch.uk.
Your child does need to be prioritising their revision but they will also need to be encouraged to take regular breaks. Self-care is going to be very important throughout this period as the examination season is long and demanding. It is absolutely natural for your child to be worried or anxious about their upcoming examinations and results; at school we have encouraged students to try and reframe that narrative so they start to look forward to their examinations and build up their self-belief so any way this can be reinforced at home would be fantastic. Checking your child is getting a good night’s sleep before their examinations, eating a healthy and substantial breakfast on the day of their exam, and that their routine remains regular are crucial throughout this exam period.
It is wonderful to see the range of talent across the year group and I know that the vast majority of our students are working incredibly hard in the preparation for their examinations. Many of our students have already demonstrated some excellent work, either as part of their assessed pieces for coursework in a number of subjects or in their Art portfolios. As the exam season lasts up to six weeks for some of our students, praising their continued efforts will be very important for their confidence and stamina, so please help us to do this by acknowledging the efforts of your as they prepare for and sit these vitally important examinations.
Again, thank you for all of your support in terms of getting our Year 11 students ready for their GCSE’s.
Yours sincerely
Mr C Hutchinson
(Acting Deputy Headteacher)
