First and foremost the Department’s aims are for pupils to enjoy physical activity, for them to gain life skills through it and for them to adopt active and healthy lifestyles.

Key Stage 3 (Year 7 – 9)
In Years 7 and 8 pupils are taught as forms in mixed gender groups rotating around 3 activities per term with different activities in Autumn, Spring and Summer terms.

In Year 9 the pupils are single gender with two boys and two girls groups in each half year rotating around 2 activities per term with different activities in Autumn, Spring and Summer.

The Curriculum  across the Key Stage is organised to allow access for pupils to experience individual activities, such as swimming and athletics, invasion games, such as football and hockey, divided court activities, such as badminton and tennis and striking and fielding activities such as rounders and cricket.

Key Stage 4 (year 10 – 11)
In Years 10 and 11 pupils opt for an activity per term and so study their chosen activity in more depth with opportunities to have more responsibility for their own learning. Sports Leadership opportunities are also available to the pupils at this stage.

Option PE at Key Stages 4 and 5

Pupils can opt to follow Physical Education at GCSE and BTEC First Certificate level at Key Stage 4 – the GCSE format is more suitable for pathway 1 pupils who are more likely to want to pursue the subject to a higher academic level. The BTEC allows different approaches to fulfilling tasks and is assessed on a continual assessment basis rather than by an exam at the end of the course.

Key Stage 5 (Year 12 - 13)
At Key Stage 5 pupils are able to follow Advanced level courses and BTEC First Diploma courses both of which are recognised as entry qualifications for Sport related careers.
