Key Stage 3 (Year 7 – 9) At Key Stage 3, pupils are given the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of a wide range of Art disciplines. Pupils begin by looking at the formal elements, which gives them experience of painting, tonal work, colour and 3D modelling. In Year 8, pupils expand on these and begin to develop skill in composition design, linking their work to Artists, and exploring other cultures. Finally, in Year 9, pupils are given specific projects which gives them the experience of working at BTEC and GCSE specifications. This prepares them for when they are ready to take their options. Key Stage 4 (year 10 – 11) At Key Stage 4, pupils have the option of choosing a GCSE or a BTEC certificate in Art and Design. At GCSE, pupils complete 2-3 projects, finishing with a 10 hour exam at the end of the 2 years. The GCSE allows pupils to explore a variety of art disciplines with a creative and personal response. At BTEC, pupils will complete 2 units, finishing with an additional unit in a specialist area. The BTEC gives pupils real life scenarios, and they are expected to work with a specific brief towards a final product. Which ever course you are thinking of choosing, you will have the opportunity to explore a wide range of materials, techniques and processes, whilst studying the work of others. Key Stage 5 (Year 12 - 13) At Key Stage 5, pupils can take the option of an A-Level in Art and Design. There are 3 projects over the 2 years, finishing with a 15 hour exam at the end of the course. Pupils will be expected to incorporate a more personal style and response in to their work, whilst studying and being influenced by the work of other Art practitioners. The course allows pupils to work more independently, whilst having personal one to one tuition. Coming soon in 2009/2010 – The Art Department are starting an A-Level in Photography!!!!
