In the Languages Department we aim . To develop in students the ability to use the target language effectively for purposes of practical communication. There are six teachers in the Department based in 4 rooms Key Stage 3 (Year 7 – 9) Every student learns French from Year 7. In Year 8 almost all have the opportunity to learn either German or Spanish (in alternate years) in addition to French. Students learn how to understand, speak and write in the foreign language as well as learning about the culture and the countries where the language is spoken. Key Stage 4 (year 10 – 11) Students in Pathway 1 choose one of their languages to continue to GCSE. Students in other Pathways can opt to continue learning a language if they wish. GCSE broadens and extends students’ knowledge of topics first met in KS3 They are assessed by Controlled Assessments (Speaking & Writing) throughout the 2-year course and by exams at the end of the course. Key Stage 5 (Year 12 - 13) AS and A2 courses are available in French German and Spanish. The courses aim to give students sufficient command of language skills to communicate easily and with confidence, to understand and appreciate a wide range of spoken and written French, German and Spanish and to seek and convey information in various modes. On a wider level the courses also aim to develop the students' intellectual and critical faculties by encouraging the acquisition and development of learning strategies and study skills. We hope to promote an awareness and understanding of themselves, of others and of society and other cultures, awareness of the use of language and encourage an imaginative and creative approach to language.
